2027 Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha, Idul Adha in Indonesia, is the Feast of Sacrifice on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, coinciding with the climax of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca; the date shifts about 11 days earlier each year and is confirmed by the government after the moon sighting. It commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, and God's provision of a ram in the boy's place. After morning Eid prayers, mosques and neighbourhood committees slaughter cattle, goats and sheep donated by worshippers, and the meat is shared among the donor's family, neighbours and the poor, followed by dishes such as sate, gulai and tongseng. It is a national public holiday, sometimes extended with a joint leave day. Traffic is lighter than at Idul Fitri, but mosques and city centres are crowded in the morning.
