Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is the holy month in which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset; because the Islamic year is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, it begins roughly 11 days earlier each year. In Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-majority country, the Ministry of Religious Affairs confirms the start date at a moon-sighting session the evening before, and the Muhammadiyah organisation, which relies on astronomical calculation, occasionally begins a day apart. Daily life reshapes itself around the fast: families rise for the pre-dawn sahur meal, street markets sell takjil sweets in the late afternoon, and buka puasa, breaking the fast at sunset, becomes a nightly social ritual followed by tarawih prayers at the mosque.
